British Watchdog To Investigate Irish Dairy Merger

The Competition and Markets Authority in Britain (CMA) has launched an inquiry into a merger of two Irish dairies.

Cavan based company Lakeland Dairies agreed to join with Northern Ireland's LacPatrick Dairies last October, after shareholders of the two co-operatives approved the deal.

The new society was set to adopt the name of Lakeland Dairies, and with 3,200 suppliers would process over 1.8 billion litres of milk annually with revenues of over €1b.

The CMA is assessing whether the transaction could result in a lack of competition, and has set a deadline for the decision on the first phase for Wednesday 13 March.
