Housing Minister Questioned Over Failure Of Social Housing Delivery
The Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has been called on to explain why less than half of the social housing promised for 2018 has been delivered by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2018.
Raising the issue, Labour's Housing Spokesperson Jan O'Sullivan said: "The Minister for Housing has to explain the figures released today that show only 48% of the social houses that were to be built this year have been delivered by the end of the third quarter.
"There is no realistic prospect of the full target of social housing being delivered by the end of the year. The Minister must explain to opposition parties, and the country, why less than half of the homes he committed to be built this year have been delivered so far.
"Given the scale of the crisis in front of us now, this really isn't acceptable.
"It is Minister Murphy who has repeatedly ignored calls for a rent freeze, he has refused to accept that the rent pressure zones are not working, and in the face of every recommendation by the opposition, he says that the primary focus must be on supply.
"The Minister seems unwilling to tackle rising rents and unable to deliver the supply he says is the best solution."

Sinn Féin's opposition to a proposal to build 50 new social housing units in Clondalkin has been described as an "absolutely disgrace and almost beyond belief". Labour TD Robert Dowds accused Cllr Eoin Ó Broin of "complete political cowardice", and that it was people on the housing waiting list that would suffer as a result.
