EU Commission Recognises Unique Deal For Ireland In Brexit - SF

Sinn Féin has welcomed news from the EU Commission that Ireland should remain within the EU and for the EU to change to safeguard the rights and prosperity of all citizens.

TD and Brexit spokesperson David Cullinane welcomed recognition of the need for a unique deal for Ireland.

Deputy Cullinane said: "The paper recognises the unique circumstances on the Island of Ireland and need for flexible and imaginative solutions to protect the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts and ensure there is no EU Frontier across Ireland. We must ensure that all of Ireland remains within the customs and single market and continued access to EU Courts.

"In addition, the issues of rights of Irish and EU citizens are central. There can be no diminution of rights including those agreed as part of the Good Friday Agreement.

"It is clear that the British Government have failed to bring forward any convincing proposals to prevent an EU Frontier across Ireland or to safeguard the Good Friday Agreement in all parts including rights and north/south co-operation

"The entire island of Ireland should remain with the EU and for the EU to change to safeguard the rights and prosperity of all citizens."
