Irish Student In 'Very Serious' Condition Following Swim

An Irish student's condition is "very serious" following a recent morning swim in the United States.

The J-1 student, believed to be aged 22, suffered what looked like a cardiac arrest while swimming with three other people at a beach in the Northern Division Street area of Ocean City, Maryland, on Wednesay, 02 August, at around 6.30am.

It is thought that all four swimmers began to struggle in tough conditions when they entered the water.

One swimmer made it back to shore to call emergency services, and the Ocean City Fire Department rescue swimmers were able to assist two of the swimmers to shore.

However during the rescue the fourth swimmer – the Irish student – began suffering from an apparent cardiac arrest, according to the OCFD.

Their statement also read that the victim was immediately given CPR and transported to Atlantic General Hospital in "very serious condition."

The Department of Foreign Affairs have said that it is "aware of the case and is providing assistance".
