Alcohol Linked To Seven Types Of Cancer - HSE

Regular consumption of alcohol increases the risk of seven cancers, the Health Services Executive (HSE) has warned.

Following World Cancer Day on Saturday 04 February, the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) stressed the importance of prevention, and how everyone can act to reduce their risk of getting cancer.

With 1,000 cases of cancer in Ireland caused by alcohol annually,Dr. Marie Laffoy, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, NCCP, said: "While the sobering truth is that alcohol causes cancer, we know that we can act to reduce our risk. Drinking alcohol regularly increases the risk of seven cancers - mouth, throat, breast, bowel, liver, oesophageal (gullet), laryngeal (voicebox).

"Alcohol is converted into a toxic chemical which can cause cancer by damaging cells and stopping these repairing. It also increases the levels of some hormones, such as oestrogen, which can increases the risk of breast cancer."

The advice from the NCCP is firstly for everyone to makes themselves aware of their own weekly intake.

The Dept of Health and HSE recommend that women stay below 11 standard drinks and men below 17 standard drinks of alcohol spread out over the week, with everyone having at least two alcohol free days a week; One standard drink contains 10g alcohol; common examples include a half pint of beer, a small glass of wine and a pub measure of spirits.

According to Dr. Laffoy: "Some of the tips to reduce your alcohol, as advised by the Department of Health and HSE, are worth considering including trying to have a spritzer or shandy instead of a beer or wine; trying to have a lower strength beer or wine; choosing bottles rather than pints; swopping every second drink for a glass of water and finishing your glass of wine rather than topping up.

"Staying within the low risk guidelines greatly reduces your risk of developing cancer. It is quite a simple message and is something that everyone can do. These are simple actions, but worth considering and worth doing to prevent cancer cases in Ireland this year."
