SIPTU To Consider Request To Postpone Ballot On Industrial Action

SIPTU has said that it will consider postponing a ballot of its members in an ongoing public pay dispute, following a request from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU).

SIPTU had previously said that it would ballot its members today unless new talks on public pay had been agreed.

However, speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, SIPTU President Jack O'Connor said that ICTU's request would be considered to allow discussion of a collective approach to resolve the dispute.

Mr O'Connor said: "We have always made it clear that we strongly support a national agreement. It's the best way for every worker in the public service. You have far more leverage as part of 300,000 workers than trying to do it on your own and actually it's better for the country as well."

SIPTU said that further updates would be made following internal discussions.
