Construction Sector 'Must Address Gender Imbalance' - AECOM

The Irish construction sector must address its gender imbalance if it is to solve the skills crisis, according to engineering firm AECOM.

The US infrastructure services company said with over 90% of the industry employees comprising of men, the sector is "missing out on much-needed female talent".

At an AECOM workshop held in Dublin earlier this month, industry leaders discussed a range of subjects including female leadership traits, pay gap monitoring and the role of mentoring programmes.

John O'Regan, AECOM's Director of Programme Cost Consultancy in Ireland, said the industry's failure to inspire more women to consider a career in the sector is "unnecessarily limiting the talent pool".

"Given the current skills shortage in the property and construction sector, companies that demonstrate their commitment to a diverse workforce will attract the most talented and forward-looking employees," he said.
