Ministers Congratulate Paul O'Donovan On Olympic Gold Medal

Ministers Shane Ross and Patrick O'Donovan have congratulated Paul O'Donovan on winning Gold in the men's lightweight sculls final at the World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, said: "The O'Donovan brothers light up the Olympics, particularly from an Irish perspective, and I am delighted for Paul to have been able to follow up his success in Rio with Gold in the World Championships. Both of them have a bright future and no doubt the Irish public will be right behind. It was an outstanding performance and to backed it up so close to Rio shows what an athlete he is."

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Patrick O'Donovan, added: "I am delighted for Paul, himself and his brother were great ambassadors for Ireland during the Games, and captured the imagination of the country. Another great performance, and another medal to be bringing home to Skibbereen. It was a superb performance and nothing less than he deserves for all the hard work he has put in, winning gold at a World Championship is something very special. His family and friends and the rowing club will be so proud."

Man Absconds From Loughan House
A prisoner has absconded from Loughan House open prison in Cavan. Gardaí have said the man, who is in his 30s and from Tallaght in Dublin, escaped on Thursday (5 February) at around 2.30pm. The prisoner, named in reports as John Paul Duncan, had been in custody since February 2010, after being caught in possession of €2.8m worth of drugs.

Council Confirms Cost Of Extra Councillors Will Be Over €330,000
Dublin City Council has confirmed in a report to Fianna Fáil Councillor Paul McAuliffe that the cost of implementing the government's plan to increase the number of councillors in the city by 11 will cost more than €330,000 annually from the city's already stretched budget.

Teen Gets Six-Years For Manslaughter Of 73-Year-Old
A Co Leitrim teenager has been sentenced to six years for killing a 73-year-old man two years ago. 19-year-old Brendan McGovern was found not guilty of murder, but convicted of the manslaughter of John Golden at his home in Killeshandra, Co Cavan.

Irish Man On Life Support After Sydney Assault
A 23-year-old Irish man is now on life support after an attack in Sydney. Gearóid Walsh was viciously attacked at a takeaway food shop in the Sydney suburb of Coogee last Sunday. Police believe he had been drinking at a number of pubs before a fracas insued, during which he was punched and fell to the pavement.

Man Who Murdered Brother Sentenced
A man who murdered his brother following a drunken argument has been sentenced to four and a half years by a Dublin Court. Derek McGrath, 37, of Fortlawn Park, Mountview, Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty in July to killing 23-year-old Anthony at the deceased's home in October 2006.
