SF's Martin Kenny 'Horrified' At Minutes Of Internal HSE Meeting
Sinn Féin's Martin Kenny has said he is "horrified" the HSE is planning to slash mental health services in order to balance the books.
The TD for Sligo-Leitrim claims the minutes of a HSE meeting, which took place in May and have been released by Shannonside Radio, revealed "Executive plans to slash services".
"When I call on behalf of the people I represent for restoration or even maintenance of services, I am told one thing and then I see this report of an internal meeting and find that the HSE’s plan B, is to slash services to the most vulnerable, those with mental health problems," Deputy Kenny said.
"This meeting discusses ways to knock €300,000 off the mental health budget in Sligo Leitrim between now and the end of the year.
"It is a shocking reflection on the HSE that its priorities are based on budgets and not on patients. The list of proposed cuts in horrifying and at a time when every community in Ireland is becoming more aware of the vulnerability of people to taking their lives by suicide, it is nothing short of outrageous.
"I have written to the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, for reassurance that this scenario will not be allowed to unfold here in this constituency or anywhere else."

Deputy O'Sullivan made the call while speaking in a Dáil debate on mental health, where she said that €12m taken from the mental health budget this year, could not be allowed to fall into "the black hole of the general Health budget".
