Fianna Fáil 'Fully Committed' To Achieving Equality For New Teachers
Fianna Fáil is "fully committed to achieving equality for newly qualified teachers", the party's spokesperson on education and skills, Thomas Byrne, has announced.
Deputy Byrne made the comments after attending a demonstration led by newly qualified teachers outside Leinster House earlier today, 22 June.
"Fianna Fáil fully supports the principle of equal treatment for newly recruited staff in the public sector, including teachers," Deputy Byrne said.
"New entrants to the teaching profession do not receive the same allowances as their longer serving colleagues. This cannot be justified and it leads to a corrosive attitude within schools which severely damages morale amongst all staff.
"We believe that there should be a focus on equalising pay for new entrants in any further pay agreements. I'm committed to restoring full equality of treatment for all teachers. I welcome the establishment of a Public Service Pay Commission to examine pay levels across the public service, including entry levels of pay. This was a key demand of Fianna Fáil in our discussions on an arrangement to facilitate a minority Government.
"Fianna Fáil will engage constructively with this Commission when it is established. We will also be seeking an early conclusion to its work. This cannot be something that is allowed to drag on for months on end.
"I also believe that there are too many temporary teachers on causal contracts in the school sector. We are committed to improving their terms and conditions of employment," said Deputy Byrne.

Marking EU Equal Pay Day 2018, Labour has said that it is time for the Government to act on the Gender Pay Gap in Ireland. Last month, the Seanad passed all stages of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (Gender Pay Gap) Information Bill 2017, a Private Members Bill initiated by the Labour group in the Seanad.

Ibec has slammed plans by the Low Pay Commission for a 50c increase in the national minimum wage. The group, which represents Irish business, said the case is at odds with all the economic evidence. It also said the increase would heap pressure on companies still struggling to stay in business.
