Minister For Justice Urged To Reveal 'Detailed Information' In McGabe Case

The Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, has been urged to reveal the nature of the 'more detailed information' given to her by the Garda Commissioner regarding a meeting between two Garda officers and Sergeant Maurice McCabe in Mullingar.

Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams, made the call and said that the government "has failed to address key issues of best practice and accountability of an Garda Síochána".

"Last week we learned that the Justice Minister has failed to act on a recommendation of the Garda Commissioner, made to her on May 19th, to refer recent allegations to GSOC," Mr Adams said.

"This follows the claim from two Gardaí that Sergeant McCabe was acting out of "malice".

"In a PQ response to Teachta Jonathan O'Brien the Justice Minister said that she was consulting 'with the Attorney General about the precise nature of such a referral' and that subsequently the Garda Commissioner had provided her with 'more detailed information'.

"The Justice Minister needs to make clear, what this additional information was, is it new information, did she seek it from the Commissioner, and was it available to the O'Higgins Commission.

"We also need to know if she has now finally passed this complaint to GSOC."
