Sinn Féin Announces Housing Crisis Events

Sinn Féin has announced a series of events to raise awareness of the current housing crisis in Dublin and to demand action from the government.

Chair of Dublin City Council Housing SPC, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, said: "We are in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis. Nowhere is that more evident than here in Dublin. The most recent statistics are damning. We have over 21,000 families on City Council’s housing lists. In July, there were 556 families homeless including 1185 children. This is a huge increase from 2014. In July 2014, there were 359 adults with 595 children homeless. This increase is a damning indictment of the Government's failure to rise to the challenge.

"An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister Alan Kelly are issuing daily press statements in an attempt to spin their way out of this crisis. But their spin only proves how removed they are from the reality of this human crisis.

"Sinn Féin is holding a number of protests in Dublin over the next few weeks to draw attention to the crisis and to demand the Government take immediate action.

"The Government must introduce rent control and increase rent allowance to ensure people stay in the homes they are in and to stop the haemorrhaging of families on to the streets. It is a disgrace that spending on rent allowance has been cut by €200m in recent years. This money must be made available to families in the private rented sector.

"We also need the government to give adequate funding to local authorities to start building social housing to meet the needs of those currently languishing on housing lists. This is the long term solution to the housing crisis.

"Tomorrow, Sinn Féin will be having the first of these protests at the GPO, 12.30pm. This will be followed by protests across Dublin on Saturday. Next Wednesday, there will be a protest outside the Department of Environment. There will be a further protest on September 2nd at the Dáil."
