Concerns Raised Over 15% Rise In Serious Crime

There has been a 15% rise in serious crime, according to the latest crime figures.

The number of assaults, thefts and burglaries has risen by 15% in the last year, according to figures due to be published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has expressed serious concerns.

He said: "While these figures are alarming, they unfortunately do not come as a surprise. This is the knock-on effect that Sinn Féin warned of while this Government drove forward with its austerity plan and was intent in cutting back on the vital resources that our Gardaí needed to do their job.

"There is a direct correlation between these figures and the closure of rural Garda stations, the lack of investment in Garda resources, and the delay in lifting the recruitment moratorium.

"There is a simple solution to be found here. In order for our police force to be fit for the purpose of a modern force, the Government must increase investment in Garda personnel and resource."
