HSE And LRC Expected To Agree Payment Plan To Social Care Workers

The HSE has returned to the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) to agree a pay dispute over money owed to social care workers in Galway and Roscommon.

Galway West TD Derek Nolan said 400 social care workers from Brothers of Charity Services and Ability West are due €7.5m from the HSE for unpaid Twilight Payments dating back to 2004.

The payments relate to time and one sixth for 8pm to midnight.

Mr Nolan said: "Back in 2004, the Labour Court recommended that the HSE face their debts and pay the workers the wages owed to them. On the 3 March 2015, the HSE accepted that it has a legal obligation for back pay for 'twilight hours' previously worked by staff.

"While we are getting closer to a resolution, we still do not have full agreement. Furthermore, other categories of workers in the HSE such as managers, nurses, care assistants and outside agencies have been paid in full.

"The HSE claim that they do not have sufficient funds to pay these wages, yet this payment is not and should not be optional. These hours have been worked and money is owed in return."
