Independent Panel To Lead Portiuncula Review Named

The nine people that will undertake an independent review of maternity services at Portiuncula Hospital in Galway have been announced.

Dr James Walker, Professor of Obstetrics, will chair the body, which is completed by:

Rachel Conaty, assistant Director of Midwifery and Nursing at the National Maternity Hospital, from 2008-2015

Professor Sean Daly, former Master of the Coombe Women's Hospital

Professor Eugene Dempsey, consultant neonatologist Cork University Hospital

Dr Adrienne Foran, consultant neonatologist, Rotunda Hospital

Dr Paul Hughes, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Kerry

Dr Elaine Madden, head of midwifery and gynaecology, South Eastern Trust, Belfast

Breda Shiel Kerans, service user and member of the Maternity Services Steering Group

Cora McCaughan, head of the HSE's National Incident Management and Learning Team

The review is expected to begin within a few weeks and is expected to last approximately five months.

'Failure To Provide Basic Care' In Savita Case
A report into the death of Savita Halappanavar and related issues, found there was a failure to provide the most basic elements of care. Mrs Halappanavar, 31, died in a hospital in Ireland in October 2012. Halappanavar was 17-weeks pregnant when she was admitted to hospital.

Govt Urged To Resist Religious Influence On Maternity Hospital
The Minister for Health has been urged to consider a Compulsory Purchase Order of the land at St Vincent's Hospital for the new National Maternity Hospital. Sinn Fein Health spokesperson Louise O'Reilly has made the call in an effort to counter the attempts of the Vatican and the Catholic Church to influence and interfere with the project.
