Tens Of Thousands Join Anti-Water Charge Protest

Campaign group Right2Water have lead an anti-water charge protest in Dublin.

Right2Water, a coalition of community groups, political parties and trade unions, claim that up to 80,000 people joined Saturday's protest. Other reports put the number of attendees between 30,000 and 40,000.

Three individual groups are understood to have gathered at Connolly Station, Heuston Station and Merrion Square for this year's first anti-water charge protest. The groups then marched to O'Connell Bridge before congregating on O'Connell Street.

Speakers at the events are understood to have called on protesters not to pay their water bills, the first of which are due to issued next month.

Four More Arrests Made In Water Charge Protest Investigation
Gardaí investigating an anti-water charge protest in Jobstown last November have made further arrests. Four men were arrested on Wednesday morning. It follows the arrest of four others on Tuesday in connection with the protest, which saw the Tánaiste Joan Burton trapped in her car for more than two hours.

Four Arrested Over Water Charge Protest
Gardaí have arrested four people this morning in connection with a water charge protest held in Jobstown last November. Officers carried out the arrests on Tuesday morning in Tallaght. It is understood those arrested include two men, a woman and a teenage boy. Tánaiste Joan Burton was trapped in her car for more than two hours during the protest.

Taoiseach Met By Protesters In Cork
Around 200 protesters greeted the Taoiseach Enda Kenny as he arrived at an event in Blackpool in Cork. The anti-water charge protesters, carrying placards, jeered and shouted at the Taoiseach had to be exited from his car, but gardaí said the protest remained peaceful.

Sinn Féin are considering a motion of no confidence in the Ceann Comhairle, as they seek an urgent meeting. The party whip in the Dáil Aengus Ó Snodaigh said: "The Sinn Féin Dáil Group does not have confidence in the Ceann Comhairle.

Taxi Drivers In Dublin City Protest
Taxi drivers will be taking to the streets again in another high profile protest in Dublin city centre this afternoon. It is the fifth protest by taxi drivers this year alone, and the protest has been scheduled for today at noon, with drivers meeting at various assembly points before a rally outside Government buildings.
