Hiqa Report Leads To New Hospital Hand Hygiene Requirements

A number of new measures are to be introduced to tackle hand hygiene in hospitals.

It follows unannounced inspections carried out by the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) at 49 of the 50 public acute hospitals between February 2014 and January 2015.

The resulting report said that while many of the hospitals did meet national infection prevention and control standards, it found that all the facilities could do more to improve hand hygiene and environmental cleanliness.

It is understood that Dublin's Connolly Hospital will withhold parking permits from staff who refuse to participate in hand-hygiene training.

And junior doctors at Cork University Hospital and Bantry General Hospital will be required to complete an online hand-hygiene course or a session with the infection-control nurse.

The full Hiqa report can be read here (PDF).
