Homeless Shelter Approved In Georgian District

A proposed homeless hostel in Dublin's Georgian district has been approved by Dublin City Council.

The council gave the go-ahead to the project, despite 63 submissions made in opposition to the proposed 30-bed hostel on the site of the former Longfields Hotel on Fitzwilliam Street.

It is understood concerns were raised about the potential damage to the two protected Georgian buildings, which date to the early 19th century.

The proposed hostel is to be run by the Simon Community and will replace its existing facility on Harcourt Street.

Final approval for the change of use of the building and the necessary refurbishment works is expected to be given at next weeks council meeting.
