Teachers Follow Through On Strike Action

Up to 30,000 teachers are today taking strike action in an ongoing dispute over changes to the Junior Cycle.

The teachers are opposed to proposed changes that would see them responsible for assessing 40% of a students final Junior Certificate. They claim the move would damage the relationship between teachers and students.

The Taoiseach yesterday urged the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland and the Teachers' Union of Ireland members to not go through with today's strike action, saying that the only people being affected were the students.

Talks between the unions and government have been ongoing, however nothing has been resolved.
