Sinead O'Connor Joins Sinn Féin

Sinead O'Connor has said she has joined Sinn Féin.

The singer revealed her decision in an official blog post on her website which she entitled "Strange Week".

She said she wanted to join the political party as a "regular punter who wants to learn and contribute with whatever strengths I might have or learn."

She added: "I'd like to see a proper socialist Ireland. I'd like to be educated as to how ordinary people like me can help bring about the changes which would make every child equally cherished and make everyone have equal rights."

However, she also admitted that she had "never voted an election in my life."

Later, the 48-year-old took to Facebook and called for Sinn Féin's leadership to step down. She wrote: "I joined Sinn Féin today. I might not even be the kind of person they want, because I'm gonna write here that I feel the elders of Sinn Féin are going to have to make 'the supreme sacrifice' and step down shortly in the same way the last Pope did."

A spokesperson for the party has said they are currently processing the singer's membership request.
