US Moves To Protect Undocumented Immigrants

US President Barak Obama has introduced a series of measures to protect millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation.

The news is expected to have a positive effect for the approximate 50,000 undocumented Irish immigrants living and working in the US.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael TD and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, Pat Breen, said: "I warmly welcome this courageous decision by President Obama. This is real progress and will help some of the 50,000 undocumented Irish living and working in the United States.

"The plans will be a welcome relief for those with families born in the United States and who have lived there for over five years. They will be able to register their taxes and live without fear of deportation. Some should be able to travel home where there is a humanitarian need."

An announcement of the full measure the President will seek to make law is expected later today.
