Tax Relief Announced To Help Care For Elderly At Home
The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, has announced an amendment to the Finance Act, that will make provisions to help people care for elderly relatives at home with the help of a nurse or carer.
The new tax relief will mean the elderly can remain at home into their later years, a move welcomed by Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden
Deputy McFadden said: "Oftentimes elderly people need extra support and care in order to stay in their own homes into their later years. The amendment to the Finance Act will raise the level of tax relief available to employ a professional nurse or carer in the home from €50,000 to €75,000 per annum. This will make a big difference to families in terms of affording these costs.
"Older people do better at home. They retain their independence and are more comfortable in their own surroundings. Of course it is not always possible for people to remain in their own homes for as long as they wish for medical and other reasons. However this new tax relief aims to help people with the financial costs involved in staying at home where they need additional support."

No More Income Tax Hikes, Claims Lenihan
The Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has said there will be no further income tax increases this year. The vow comes only a month after the Government doubled the income levies in the emergency budget. Despite the assurances, Mr Lenihan has confirmed that a property tax and a carbon tax were being considered.
