Penal Policy Review Group Call For Written Explanations Of Prison Terms

The Penal Policy Review group has made a series of recommendations on the criminal justice system in Ireland.

One of the recommendations calls for Judges to provide a written explanation of why a person has been jailed.

Alongside this they call for the use of imprisonment to be reduced and urged all government departments to consider crime prevention when formulating public policy.

Official figures show that last year 13,000 people where imprisoned, with more 7,300 of those for non-payment of fines.

Of its recommendations report, the Review group has said that a "mechanism should be established to ensure implementation of the report within six months."
