Cardinal Seán Brady Retires

The Vatican has formally accepted the resignation of Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

Pope Francis has accepted the Cardinal's retirement as Primate of all Ireland upon his 75th birthday, in accordance with Canon Law.

A native of Laragh in Co Cavan, Archbishop Brady was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI on 24 November 2007.

Archbishop Eamon Martin, 52, of the Derry diocese, has been lined up as his replacement.

Cardinal Brady's time as primate of all Ireland saw mass controversy across the country over the clerical abuse scandals.

In 2010, he confirmed that he represented the Church at meetings in which two teenage victims of notorious child abuser Fr Brendan Smyth signed an oath of silence about their complaints.

Brendan Smyth is thought to have abused at least 20 children over a 40-year period.

Cardinal Brady said: "I am pleased that Pope Francis has today accepted the resignation which I offered to him on the occasion of my seventy fifth birthday. I warmly congratulate Archbishop Eamon Martin who today becomes Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of All Ireland and Coarb Phadraic."
