Controversy Grows Over Rail Strikes

Strike action by unions at Iarnród Éireann will damage the viability of the company, Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has said.

Mr Donohoe was speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme when he said that while he understood workers difficulties, the cuts at rail company needed to be implemented to secure the company's future.

It is understood that the cost-saving measures at Iarnród Éireann have been described as "unavoidable".

Fianna Fáil’s Transport spokesperson Timmy Dooley however criticised the minister for his stance: "Minister Donohoe is clearly relishing the opportunity to strike some sort of macho Fine Gael anti-union pose in the media, but this posturing is unlikely to help put an end to the threatened strike and actually aid those using rail services."
