Hundreds Of Thousands Of Litres Of Water Being Transported To Aran Islands

Galway County Council has launched a large-scale transportation system to supply water to the Aran Islands of Inis Méain and Inis Oírr.

A drought has left water supplies on the islands at "dangerously low levels", with the councils establishing a system to move up to 240,000 litres of water daily.

It is understood that the islands have had very little rainfall and that the porous limestone terrain has meant that only small amounts of rainwater have been retained.

A converted cargo boat is being filled from the mains supply at Rossaveal harbour in Connemara and ferried to the islands.
