More Garda Resources Needed To Tackle Increasing Crime - FF
Extra Gardaí resources are needed to deal with an increasing in serious crimes, Fianna Fáil has said.
Following the publication of Central Statistic Office figures, that show a "substantial" rise in burglary and related offences, Fianna Fáil's Seamus Kirk, TD for Louth, said: "The figures from the CSO appear to back up the belief that crime in the area is on the rise. Between January and March this year there were 75 assaults in the Louth Garda Division. There were also 287 burglaries and 478 theft offences committed during that time. All of these offences are significantly higher than for the same period in 2013."
Deputy Kirk went on to say that many communities across the country "are living in fear", particularly those in isolated and rural areas.
"They have seen their local Gardai deployed elsewhere and are concerned about crime sprees in their areas. People living alone are particularly anxious and are worried about being targeted by criminals," Deputy Kirk said.
He added: "Garda resources in Louth have been severely depleted by this Government. Officers are going above and beyond the call of duty and carrying out their work in extremely constrained conditions. Technology, equipment and Garda vehicles are all in urgent need of upgrading.
"It is no coincidence that there has been an increase in crime at a time when the force is stretched to the limit. It is little wonder that Garda morale is on the floor, and it is an issue that needs to be addressed swiftly.
"We need to maintain a strong Garda presence in border areas, yet the Minister has not sanctioned any additional resources for the region. In fact, the recruitment of new Gardai has been deferred once again. The Minister cannot afford to neglect falling Garda numbers any longer.
"It is imperative that we have a robust frontline force, which is visible and active in the community and I would urge her to address the resources and staffing issue without delay."

Some 80% of respondents to the Garda Public Attitudes Survey have said that they are "satisfied" with their local garda service. The survey also found that 76% of respondents agreed that Gardaí in their area can be relied upon to be there when you need them, and 81% said that the Gardaí in their area listen to the concerns of local people.

The number of people who said they were victims of crime has fallen over the last year, according to the latest An Garda Síochána's Public Attitudes Survey, which has been published for the first time. The survey also found improved satisfaction among victims who reported their crime to Gardaí, and a reduction in the fear of crime.

The budget for the Justice and Equality sector is to be increased by €85 million, totalling €2.54 billion in 2017. Funding has been provided for the recruitment of 800 Garda recruits in 2017 and up to 500 civilians to support the wide ranging reform plan in train in An Garda Síochána. A total of €71.

On Wednesday, gardaí from the Organised Crime Unit stopped a vehicle on the Naas Road. A kilo of cocaine was recovered with an estimated street value of €70,000 and two men were arrested.
