Labour Introduce Legislation To Stop Credit Card Betting

New legislation has been proposed seeking to introduce a clause to prohibit bookmakers accepting bets paid for by credit cards.

Labour TD Arthur Spring introduced the legislation as part of the Betting (Amendment) Bill 2013, which was debated on Wednesday night at a meeting of the the Oireachtas finance sub-committee.

Deputy Spring made the argument that no bookmaker would give a customer credit in order to place a bet, " so why should the credit be offered in the form of credit cards."

"With the ease of access to credit cards, I am suggesting that we just allow the transactions take place from debit cards, rather than credit cards," Deputy Spring told the meeting.

Minister of State, Fergus O'Dowd said he would ask the Minister for Finance to consider deputy Spring's comments.
