Luas Camera System Welcomed But More Needs To Be Done - Labour

A new system of traffic cameras at Luas junctions have been welcomed, but Labour TD Sean Kenny, a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, has said that more need to be done.

"A camera system designed to detect motorists that break red lights at junctions where the Luas crosses other roads, is to be put online later on this year. Footage of motorists breaking lights at Luas junctions will then be assessed by An Garda Síochana to see if penalty points and fixed charges should be imposed," Mr Kenny said.

Adding: "Trials of this system have already been run by the RPA, Dublin City Council and An Garda Síochána. While this is new camera system is definitely a step in the right direction, I believe more does need to be done, particularly along the part of the Luas line that runs along Abbey Street, as there has been a string of accidents on this part of the Luas line.

"I hope that reports of the new system being highlighted by a cross-group publicity campaign are correct, as there does need to be more awareness of the dangers that people need to be aware of around the Luas line.

"The Luas operator and the other relevant authorities must make sure that pedestrians are also protected from collisions, or from cars mounting the footpath along the Luas lines where accidents involving Luas trams are known to occur. I think it might be best if these footpaths were fully segregated, except at pedestrian crossings, to ensure some protection for those who are moving about the city on foot."
