DCC To Vote On Mayoral Elections Proposal

Dublin city councillors will vote this evening on a proposal calling for a directly elected Mayor, with councillors deciding if the proposal should go to a public vote.

The proposal, which would see the Mayor of Dublin being directly elected and given executive powers similar to the Mayor's of London and New York, needs the support of a majority of the city's councillors.

However, some predict that the move will be opposed by Fingal councillors.

If the four local authorities back the proposals, it would then go to a public vote. If the public also back the move the government would have two years to produce legislation.
