Remediation Fund Established For Pyrite Homes

A €10m State-funded redress scheme has been established for homeowners affected by pyrite.

Thousands of homes have been identified as having been damaged by the presence of the mineral in their foundations, which has caused subsidence and cracks in the structure.

From today, homeowners can make an application to the fund through the Pyrite Resolution Board.

A number of conditions need to be met to apply for remediation through the scheme.

These include:

• Dwellings must be located within the counties of Kildare, Meath or Offaly or the administrative areas of Fingal County Council or Dublin City Council

• Dwellings must have been constructed and completed between 1 January 1997 and 12 December 2013

• Dwellings must have been assessed, tested and certified as having a damage condition rating of 2 and it must be verified that damage is attributable to pyrite heave

• The applicant must be the owner or joint owner of a dwelling. Generally, an application can only be made in respect of one dwelling and the dwelling must have been purchased before 12 December 2013

• The applicant must be able to show, to the satisfaction of the PRB, that he/she does not have available to him or her any practicable option, other than under the Scheme or the use of his or her own resources, to remediate or secure the remediation of the dwelling.
