Gender Recognition Bill To Be Brought Before Governent

A new proposal is to be brought to the government allowing transgender people to apply to have their acquired gender recognised from the age of 16.

A draft of the Gender Recognition Bill was published by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton. The Bill will allow transgender people to have their status recognised by the State for all purposes – including the right to marry or enter a civil partnership in the acquired gender.

Under the Bill, transgender people will apply to the Department of Social Protection for a gender recognition certificate, which once issued will allow them to apply for a new birth certificate, recognising their acquired gender.

Within the original Bill, this process could begin when the person turned 18, but following two recommendation, that age has been dropped to 16.
