Varadkar Rules Out New Toll Or Congestion Charges

Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has said no new road tolls or congestion charges will be introduced, "during the lifetime of this government".

According to reports, Mr Varadkar has said that public transport would need to improve significantly before new fiscal incentives could be used to force motorists out of their cars.

It follows the publication of the Department of Transport paper 'Climate Change Mitigation', which reveals that Ireland has the second highest car usage among EU member states.
