€20m To Be Invested In 'Milk Food' Research

Funding of more than €20m is to be used by the Foods for Health Ireland (FHI) group to research milk for bioactive ingredients that could be used to develop new foods with nutritional and health benefits.

The money is being supplied by the Department of Jobs through Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and five companies involved in the research at FHI.

€16m of the second stage funding for FHI will come from the Government, with the balance coming from companies Carbery, Dairygold, Glanbia, the Kerry Group and the Irish Dairy Board.

Some 73 people will be employed at FHI during the next phase.

FHI involves teams of researchers at UCD, UCC, UL, Teagasc, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth and DCU.

€13.5m Funding Into Health Research
€13.5m is to go towards funding for new health research projects announced today by Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar. A total of 36 projects are being supported by the Health Research Board (HRB) over the next three to five years, including research into cancer, asthma, kidney injuries and antibiotics.

Fin Whale In Baltimore Harbour Dies
The fin whale trapped for two days in Baltimore harbour has died. The 18m, 40-tonne mammal was first spotted making its way through the harbour on Tuesday morning. Whale experts believed it was an emaciated and sick young female. The whale became very agitated and distressed in recent days and injured itself more on the harbour wall.
