Criminal Investigation Launched Into Theft Of Financial Details
Garda have launched a criminal investigation into the theft of financial and personal details of over one-and-a-half million people.
The details were taken from Clare-based Loyaltybuild when their computer systems were hacked.
The Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation is leading the investigation with support from the computer crime unit.
It is understood that the Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawkes, will also lead a separate investigation into the theft.
Loyaltybuild runs special offers and incentive schemes for major retailers, utilities and service providers in Ireland, the UK, Scandinavia and Switzerland.
The financial and personal details, including names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, of around 1.12 million clients are thought to have been taken.

Gardaí in Co Clare have launched an investigation following the discovery of a man's body on Monday morning. Garda have not revealed details of the discovery but according to reports, an area in the Ennistymon area of the Clare has been sealed off. A preliminary examination of the scene is underway.

Detectives from Legacy Investigation Branch have issued a fresh appeal for information on the murder of Brendan McKenna near Comber in June 1993, on what would have been Brendan's 58th birthday. Mr McKenna was shot dead by a gunman as he drove to a quarry on the Ballystockart Road, Comber on 2 June 1993.
