'Substantial Support' For Gay Marriage - Shatter

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has told RTÉ he believes there is "substantial support" for same-sex marriage.

He also said he hoped Fine Gael would support the motion and welcomed the support from opposition parties in the Cabinet.

Mr Shatter's comments follow the decision yesterday to hold a referendum on same-sex marriage.

He described the decision as "historic" and said that, while the Church's position was understandable and unsurprising, all citizens of Ireland should be treated equally in the eyes of the State.

Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Shatter said: "The church is entitled to express its views on these issues."

"It's for us as politicians, it's for members of the Government and the opposition parties to address these issues based on reality.

"And we know we have individuals of different sexual orientation and I don't believe that people should be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation."

The referendum on same-sex marriage will be held in the first half of 2015.
