Co Offaly Iron Works To Cut 32 Jobs
32 jobs at a Co Offaly iron foundry are to be cut under restructuring proposals.
Workers at EJ, the former Cavanagh Foundry in Birr, were told by management that loss-making activities was to blame for the proposal to reduce staff numbers from 50 to 32.
The management also announced that the company was no longer "financially viable" and that manufacturing of iron castings would be moved to France.
It is understood that some workers dealing with sales, marketing, distribution and steel fabrication will be retained.
A consultation process is now underway between management and staff.

A 32-year-old man is due to appear before Dun Laoghaire District Court charged in connection with a drug seizure in Dundrum. Gardaí from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau seized heroin, worth an estimated €240,000, after stopping and searching a vehicle off Sandymount Road on Tuesday.

Half-Year Profit Rises 32% For Ryanair
Ryanair has announced a 32% increase in its half-year net profit. Its profit rose to €795m, leading the budget airline to predict its full-year profit would now be between €750m and €770m. The company's previous forecast was €650m.

Minor Works Scheme Failure Raising Parents Back-To-School Costs - FF
The government's failure to commit to a Minor Works Scheme for schools is resulting in higher back-to-school costs for parents, Fianna Fáil has claimed. According to the party's Education Spokesperson Charlie McConalogue, schools are being forced to increase the voluntary contributions asked of parents in order to just keep the school running.

Co Derry Man Beaten With Iron Bars
Details have emerged of how a man was beaten with metal bars by three masked men in a burglary in Co Londonderry. The men got into a house at Farranseer Park, Coleraine, shortly before midnight on Wednesday and assaulted the man in an upstairs room, even though a woman and young girl were in the room at the time.
