CRA Calls For Total Ban On Corporal Punishment

A children's rights organisation has called on the government to uphold its commitment under international law and ban hitting children.

The Children's Rights Alliance (CRA) has called for corporal punishment, even within the home, to be completely banned, saying that the practice of physically punishing children, which is currently permitted in certain circumstances, is unacceptable.

The groups' call follows a recommendation by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to ban hitting children in Ireland.

The CRA has given the government a deadline of the end of September to respond to a formal complaint against Ireland by the Association for the Protection of All Children.
