Irishman Wins Gold At The World Championships

Fianna Fáil Leader, Micheál Martin TD, has congratulated Ireland's newest world champion Rob Heffernan.

Deputy Martin commented: "I wish my offer my heartiest congratulations to Rob Heffernan on winning the 50km walk at the World Championships in Moscow this morning.

"As a fellow Turners Cross and Corkman I am absolutely thrilled for Robert and his family. No one deserves this Gold medal more than Rob. For sheer persistence and determination, Rob has no equal.

"To come back so strong this year after the disappointment of a 4th place finish in London last year is truly inspirational. Rob is an example to every budding sports star out there of what you can achieve with hard work and dedication.

"Rob now joins an elite group of athletes that have won Gold for the country and it is a very proud day for Cork and Ireland."
