Computer Users Conned In Garda Fine Scam

An computer scam named 'Garda Ukash' has cost Irish computer users tens of thousands of euro, according to the Irish Independent.

The scam begins when someone online clicks a link in an email or pop-up window. They are then redirected to a site that warns them they have been caught illegally downloading content or viewing illegal content online. The site then gives the user the option to pay a €150 fine, which will let them avoid prosecution. The user is warned that their computer has been locked until the fine has been paid.

However, users who have subsequently paid the fine, have then discovered their computer remains locked by the 'trojan horse' virus.

Investigating the scam, garda have told computer user that no national police force would ever use such methods to issue warnings or collect fines.

They have also urged anyone who has paid one of the bogus fines to contact their local garda station and report the scam.
