Flooding In Dublin And Cork After Overnight Downpour

Parts of Dublin city and Co Cork have flooded following heavy rain on Wednesday night.

In Dublin, the Mater Hospital and Clerys department store both suffered damage from collapsed roofs and a number of houses in the city centre were flooded.

Roof repairs are expected to be carried out today, with Clerys closed and a number of patients at the Mater moved to other departments.

In Co Cork and Co Wicklow some 2,000 customers have been left without electricity.

Midleton in Co Cork also suffered flooding after heavy rainfall.

In other news, DART services between Bray and Greystones have been suspended due to lightning damage to overhead power lines.

Dublin Bus are accepting rail tickets to and from Greystones.

Met Éireann Issues Weather Warning
A weather warning has been issued by Met Éireann and will be in place for most of the day (Friday). The yellow warning comes as up to 40mm of rain is due to fall today, with winds also reaching gale force. Rain is expected to move southeastwards throughout the day and will be heavy in places.

Fire Service Responds To Clondalkin Flooding
Dublin Fire Service has been helping residents in Clondalkin after a water main burst and flooded the area. It is understood that a number of residents have been evacuated while others have been trapped in the upstairs of the homes due to the water.

Met Éireann Issues Weather Warning
Met Éireann has issued a yellow weather warning for a number of counties in Ireland as heavy rain is expected within the next few hours. The 'Be Aware' warning has been issued for Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

INMO Members Hold Further Protests
Nurses and midwives, members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), SIPTU and the PNA, are to hold further lunchtime protests. The action is being taken today (2 March) in a number of locations. It is in response to a proposed 50% increase in the annual retention fee being sought by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

Nine New Schools To Be Opened In Next Two Years
Nine new schools are to be opened in Counties Cork, Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare over the next two year. Local Education and Training Boards, the Catholic Church and multi-denominational education body Educate Together will run the schools.
