Protection Of Life Bill Moves On To Seanad

The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013 has begun its passage through the Seanad, with six days being set aside for its completion.

Four hours will be spent debating the Bill today and tomorrow.

If the Bill passes the Seanad with no further amendments it will be passed to President Michael D Higgins.

President Higgins can then either sign the Bill into Law, or with the consultation of the Council of State, refer it to the Supreme Court for a constitutionality check.

If that happens and the Supreme Court approve the legislation, not further challenge can be made of its constitutionality.

Should the Seanad pass amendments, the Dáil will be recalled from summer recess to approve or reject the additional amendments.
