Referendum To Be Held On Lowering Voting Age

The lowering of the voting age, from 18 to 16, will be put forward for public referendum following a recommendation from the constitutional convention.

The convention is made up of 66 citizens and 33 politicians and its role is to review a range of issues that could merit constitutional change. The group is chaired by Tom Arnold, the former head of Concern.

At a weekly Cabinet meeting, it was decided to accept three of four recommendations made by the convention, including: holding referendums on both the lowering of the voting age and the lowering of the minimum age requirement to be president, from 35 to 21.

The convention also recommended that the minimum term served by a President should remain at seven years and not be reduced to five.
