New Safety Measures Announced For Fishing Industry

A number of measures have been announced by the government to try and reduce the number of deaths at sea.

One of the measures will allow fishing skippers to apply for grant-aid to fund safety equipment, such as personal locator beacons, “float-free” emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs) and auto-pilot alarm systems

The State’s sea fisheries board, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), will run the new grant system.

Skippers and crews will also undertake "enhanced" safety training, and a new high level working group on safety in the fishing industry will be established.

Minister for Marine Simon Coveney and Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar announced the measures today in the west Cork fishing village of Union Hall.
