Turf Cutters Return To Galway Bog Despite Ban

Turf has been cut from a bog in Galway for the first in a year, following a ban on the practice in areas deemed Special Areas of Conservation.

The Ardgraigue bog near Kilimor is one of 53 where such a ban exists, 13 of which are in Galway.

Turf cutting began at the site around 5am on Wednesday morning, using four machines.

It is understood some 50 gathered at a roadway leading to the bog, over fears that the machinery would be confiscated.

However, there were no incidents at the site and no arrests were made.

A controversial ban was introduced in 2011 under a directive by the European Habitats Directive.

Compensation is available to turf cutters who abide by the ban.
