IHRC Calls For More Decisive Action On Magdalene Redress

A comprehensive redress scheme for all survivors of the Magdalene Laundries has been called for by the Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC).

The IHRC have also called on the government to better protect those with disabilities living in institutions, an end to the placing of people with intellectual disabilities in psychiatric institutions and to apply lessons learnt from the Magdalene Laundries.

The recommendations come in a follow-up report to McAleese Report published in February.

The IHRC report states that while State involvement in the laundries was confirmed, the original report falls short of firm conclusions on the States obligations regarding human rights.
