Donegal County Council Wind Farm Approval Overturned

Donegal County Council's decision to approve 25 large wind turbines for a 475-hectare site near Glenties, has been overturned by An Bord Pleanála.

The board ruled that the development would have "significant adverse impacts on the ecology" of the Owenea river system, including a special area of conservation that hosts the freshwater pearl mussel, a protected species.

Also raising concerns over the removal of "extensive volumes of peat", the board concluded that the project would, “constitute an unacceptable risk of pollution of nearby watercourses and seriously injure the amenities of property in the vicinity."

Adding that it would be "contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area."

Meanwhile, in Dublin and Wicklow, residents have until the end of June to consider a proposal for a new 145 turbine wind farm on the banks of the Kish and Bray.

An application has been submitted to the Minister for the Environment by Saorgas Energy Ltd for the development.

If approved it is expected the construction stage of the development is expected to create over 600 jobs, and some 250 jobs on the wind farm when completed.
