Tom Hayes Appointed Minister of State

Fine Gael’s Tom Hayes has been announced as the new Minister of State for Forestry, Horticulture, the Greyhound Industry and Food Safety, a role left vacant by the death last December of Shane McEntee.

Hayes, a beef farmer from Golden, Co Tipperary, served as a senator between 1997 and 2001, and most recently was Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications.

Mr Hayes is reprted by RTÉ as saying he was looking forward to working with Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney on the development of the food and agriculture sectors.

Hayes Accused Of 'L'Oreal Defence' Over 'Mega Wage'
A Fianna Fail minister has accused Fine Gael TD Brian Hayes of using the 'L'Oreal Denfence' to justify his €130k salary, maintaining the position that "he's worth it". Fianna Fáil Environment Spokesperson Niall Collins was responding to claims by Minister Brian Hayes that he did not enjoy a "mega salary" despite earning €130,000 per year.

Many Schools Remain Closed Despite Thaw
Hundreds of primary and second-level schools are still closed today despite the majority reopening this morning as the cold snap eases. Reports this morning say the majority of schools in the greater Dublin area have reopened. However, many schools in Munster will stay closed until tomorrow at the earliest as roads and footpaths remain treacherous.

Decision On Fees Delayed Until After Elections
Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe is expected to delay his decision on the re-introduction of third-level fees until after the local elections on June 5. Speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Secondary Teachers last night, Mr O'Keeffe said the Government would approach the matter in a fair manner.
