Ireland To Sign The Landmark Arms Trade Treaty

Today the landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) opens for signature at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Ireland is expected to be among the states to sign the treaty today, and has pledged to ratify it as soon as possible.

Colm O'Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland, said: "Since the early 1990s Amnesty International members have campaigned tirelessly for tough regulations on the international arms trade.

"We now have a treaty that can stem the flow of conventional arms and munitions that fuel war crimes and human rights abuses.

"Today's signing ceremony is another step to getting control of the US $70 billion global trade in conventional weapons. Now, we need to see countries ratify the treaty as quickly as possible."

"The Irish Government played a formidable role in negotiations for this treaty.

"In signing today, Ireland is to be commended for again leading the charge in trying to stop arms ending up in the hands of war criminals and human rights abusers. We hope Ireland will move quickly to ratifying, setting an example to other states."
