Tanaiste Rules Out Cuts To Child Benefit
Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has said that cuts to child benefit were "never on the agenda" as he dismissed Education Minister Ruairi Quinn's proposal to cut the benefit in order to fund an extra pre-school year for children.
According to the Irish Independent, Mr Gilmore has been described as determined that there will be no such cuts will his government remains in office.
Concerns had been raised after the Education Minister had proposed cutting child benefit to raise €200m to pay for an extra pre-school year for children aged three to five.
Ruling out the possibility, Mr Gilmore said: "The issue of cutting child benefit has never been on the agenda."
